What is Brugada Syndrome?

Brugada (brew-GAH-dah) Syndrome is a condition that causes an abnormal heart rhythm in the lower chambers of the heart and prevent the heart from pumping blood to the brain. The irregular heartbeat can cause fainting and lead to sudden cardiac death.

Brugada Syndrome is a rare but potentially life-threatening heart rhythm condition that is usually inherited. If you have a family history of Brugada Syndrome or sudden cardiac death, you should arrange for a screening for this condition.

What are the symptoms of Brugada Syndrome?

Brugada Syndrome doesn't cause any noticeable symptoms and many people are not aware that they have it. Common symptoms include:

  1. Dizziness
  2. Fainting
  3. Gasping and labored breathing, particularly at night
  4. Irregular heartbeats or palpitations
  5. Extremely fast and chaotic heartbeat
  6. Seizures

A major sign of is an irregular result on an electrocardiogram (ECG), a test that measures the electrical activity of the heart.

Common treatments include:

  1. Medications to prevent potentially dangerous heart rhythm
  2. Procedures
    • Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD)
    • Catheter ablation
